The Road News and Rumors Sitemap
I've been doing some small updates to The Road Rumors; nothing huge because I've been busy and the amount of news the production company has released has been minimal.
I've had a great time being a movie extra. I met a bunch of people who worked on The Road (including a cellar person!) and will write more about that shortly.
I had an idea this morning, though, that I wanted to throw out in hopes of it getting some traction.
Back in "the old days," Hollywood movie premieres were often done as charity events. A premiere would raise money for, say hemophilia research or cerebral palsy. I think this trend died out in the '70s or '80s; I don't remember there being a movie premiere to benefit, say AIDS research or anything like that.
I've just reread the book The Road (and will write more about that shortly) and was struck by how much work Father and Son spent trying to find food. This is something most of us in much of the developed world don't worry much about. Most of the book is purely speculative fiction to most of us with clean water, enough food, electricity and computers.
But, it's hardly speculative to millions, if not a billion people around the world who deal with hunger issues every day, thousands of whom die of starvation every day.
Perhaps we could encourage people who've read the book and/or will see the movie to donate money to anti-hunger programs?
I don't think this is an idea the movie producers would buy into. Hunger programs aren't "sexy." Also, they're planning to release the movie Thanksgiving weekend, which I find a little strange (yeah, I know why the movie needs to come out in late November or early December). But, if you think this is an interesting idea, send me E-mail. Perhaps we can start a grass-roots effort to raise some extra money for anti-hunger programs. Between climate change, population issues and the tendency to grow corn for biofuels, the hunger issue is only going to be more widespread. We should be doing more to help.
5/2/08 PS: I got no feedback of any kind on my hunger proposal. Oh well. After doing some research, I'm giving money to America's Second Harvest, which is ranked as a 4-star charity by Charity Navigator. If you have any extra money, now's a good time to help out.
